This page is designed to show how you cannot automatically rely on the admin to size the photo.
The same photo is used each time.
The first example is of a banner image.
The second is a rich text editor image upload relying on automatic resizing - dangerous!
The third is uploading in a text block with image on right - our most common use of images. Admin has automatically resized it to be 297 W - the full width of the right hand column.
Note how because of the shape of the photo although admin has resized it to fit the width but beacuse of its proportions it looks oversized for the page.
Ideally this photo would have been manually resized to take less space.
This text box has been left with the 'With image on right' still in place in admin which is what will happen if you delete an existing image but forget then to revert the text box design to 'Normal'.
If letting admin resize automatically is going to make the image too long for the page, the alternative is to decide how long you are prepared to allot it - say 297 - a good fall back as the width of the right hand column.
Open the photo in paint.net and image resize it to height 297 pixels. Then select edit - copy - new (following the instructions for resizing in the manual) but when you get to copying it into the new size, set the new size not to exactly match the existing photo (which is the default that will automatically appear) but to a width and height of 297 pixels . Then paste the image centrally in that space with white space either side. Save the image and upload it.
It woudl look like this.
If you had simply resized the photo to 297 height and let 'maintain aspect ratio' do the rest, it would have looked like the photo at the bottom of the page.
Same photo, 297 high and not placed centrally in a space 297 wide. Admin will automatically left align.
Finally here is an image uploaded in richt text, but where the image has first been resized to width 610 - the max to straddle both columns. As you see it works best for rectangular images that are not too high.
Note also that you keep the Paragraph style on 'Normal'.

Finally, here is the image uploaded via rich text but first resized to the max width you can have for such a photo ie 610. Because maintain aspect ratio applies, this automatically adapts the height.
This means it doesn't work well really unless it is rectangular and not too high.
