Norwich Cathedral was delighted to be the host for the
Northern European Cathedrals Conference, which took place from 9-12 May 2011.
The Conference has been a recurring source of inspiration and co-operation between cathedrals of different denomination for the last 20 years, meeting in different places all over northern Europe.
Conference theme
The theme of this year’s conference was The Cathedral – a place of learning and discovery. All cathedrals, but especially those with a historic foundation, provide opportunities for learning and discovery. We owe it to each other and God to practise the art of ‘paying attention, concentrating on what we see around us, committing ourselves to ‘transformation by the renewal of the mind’ (Romans 12:2). We use our buildings, our worship, our hospitality and our heritage to pay attention to the needs of the world, to our own spiritual needs, and to the presence of God in our midst. The Conference offered an opportunity for us to explore the many aspects and questions relating to this activity, and consideration of how we can learn from and build on our different experiences in our future activity.
Conference participation
Over 90 delegates from Iceland, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Latvia, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium and the UK attended the Conference.
Some of the delegates are pictured on the first day of the Conference outside the West doors of the Cathedral, shortly before Festive Evensong:
