How do the Friends help?

Over the years, the Friends have contributed millions of pounds to supporting the Cathedral. In 2008, over £500,000 was committed towards various Cathedral projects.

Friends’ projects included further work connected with the latest Health and Safety Legislation and Fire Regulations, and the huge undertaking of replacing all the existing drainwater pipes on the south side of the Cathedral with lead ones (now complete).

Recent Friends’ projects include the following:

The paving stones between the Cloister Garth and the arcading were completely renewed, and new drainage put in. This project cost about £250,000 to which the Friends contributed over £230,000.

Work on the South Aisle rainwater pipes was completed during 2007/8. The Friends committed £119,000 to this project.

The Dark Entry (the entrance to the Cloisters and Refectory) has been replastered and painted. The Friends have contributed £12,000 to this project which was completed in 2007.

Our income comes from subscriptions, legacies, sales of cards and, occasionally, fundraising.
