Norwich, Norfolk and the East of England

Norwich, Norfolk and the East of England

Many people come to Norwich primarily to visit Norwich Cathedral. However the area has many other attractions to offer tourists and visitors of all kinds.

Norwich

Heritage
Norwich is the most complete medieval city in Britain. In addition to stretches of the old city wall key attractions are the magnificent Norman castle (now a museum), over thirty medieval churches and the cobbled lanes near Elm Hill; these are lined with half-timbered houses, a favourite with tourists and often used as a film location.

Culture
The city has long been a cultural capital for the region. Theatregoers are spoiled for choice between the Theatre Royal, Playhouse and renowned amateur Maddermarket theatre. There are musical events to suit visitors of all tastes and ages, and restaurants, pubs and nightclubs provide a thriving night life. Every May the Norfolk and Norwich Festival, the second oldest festival in the country, sees an explosion of street events, music and the arts. The city also has two internationally acclaimed and very different art galleries - the Castle Museum and the Sainsbury Centre at the University of East Anglia.

Shopping
Norwich is one of the UK's top five places to shop and a shopping destination for people from across the East of England and beyond. There are two major shopping centres, many speciality shops and the country's largest open-air market .

Christmas
In the run up to Christmas Norwich comes alive with events, festive shopping and special Christmas food and drink. Key attractions include an outdoor ice skating rink in the historic city centre and a medieval Christmas Fayre in Norwich Cathedral Cloister.

Norfolk

The unspoilt Norfolk countryside has a wealth of attractions including picturesque villages, medieval churches and historic houses. The Norfolk Broads National Park is a unique destination for those wanting to holiday on the water, and the north Norfolk coast is known for its bird life, seafood, flint-faced houses and wonderful beaches.
